Syringa meyeri 'Palibin'
Dwarf Korean Lilac

The dwarf Korean lilac has been recognized as the 2004 Ohio Plant of the Year by Ohio's green industry professionals. BuckeyeGardening.com, a non-commercial, consumer-oriented web site offering free access to professional gardening advice, officially awarded the 2004 Ohio Plant of the Year distinction to the dwarf Korean lilac, in conjunction with the members of the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association (ONLA), a non-profit trade association of Ohio's nursery and landscape industry.

The designation of Ohio Plant of the Year is the highest recognition of Ohio's nursery professionals. Gardening and landscape enthusiasts can expect the highest levels of success when planting the dwarf Korean lilac in the landscape.

The dwarf Korean lilac, scientifically known as Syringa meyeri 'Palibin,' typically grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet, usually spreads 5 to 7 feet, and has a compact shape. The plant has small, dark green foliage and is well known for the lavender flowers that cover its shape with fragrant blooms in May.

The dwarf Korean lilac stood out from the select group of plants nominated for the 2004 BuckeyeGardening.com Ohio Plant of the Year Award, receiving high marks as the best for uniform shape and one of the easiest plants to grow.

Additionally, the dwarf Korean does not get the powdery mildew associated with many common lilacs. To be recognized as the Ohio Plant of the Year, the dwarf Korean lilac had to meet the nursery and landscape industry's criteria, including:
  • be of woody stock,
  • have the plant designation "Recommended Highly to the Trade and Public" by the ONLA Plant Selection Committee,
  • be considered low maintenance with strong pest and disease resistance and require minimal routine care,
  • be readily available in Ohio, and
  • exhibit strong survivability in the range of soil types and climates in Ohio.

Gardening and landscape enthusiasts are encouraged to ask their garden center or landscape professional about the 2004 Ohio Plant of the Year, The dwarf Korean lilac, for maintenance-free enjoyment throughout the growing season as well as abundant, fragrant blooms in May.
